For those 80’s babies, or rather those that were fortunate enough to have a chance to see those classic Ninja movies such as Enter the Ninja your in luck. Ninja Assassin is a throwback to those movies. Bear in mind that in retrospect those 1980’s Ninja movies are almost laughable by today’s standards in terms of fighting choreography and special effects. In any case Ninjas are bad ass and this movie is as well.
Ninja Assassin is about a young ninja who turns his back on the Ninja Assassin orphanage and school that raised him, leading to a confrontation with a fellow ninja from the clan. The movie is packed with martial arts fighting scenes, and swordplay with plenty of severed limbs and blood. This is no movie for kids. Flashback segments depict the orphans in the midst of their Ninja training and then later rooms of Ninjas taking on the main Ninja protagonist and the armed task forces taking on ninjas. Don’t expect a compelling story or superb dialogue though the action is thrilling. The dialogue is campy at times though it works because action dominates the screens time as it should.
One of the main actors in the movie is none other than Ninja movie legend Shô Kosugi. In the past he has even provided choreography for the highly popular and well received Sony PlayStation game Tenchu: Stealth Assassins.
If you find yourself in the mood to go to the movies and wanting to see something a little more bad ass than the new Twilight movie defiantly check out Ninja Assassin.
