9. Chrono Trigger (Square Enix/SNES)
Chrono Trigger stands as one of the best RPG’s ever made, thanks to memorable characters like a frog in a knight costume, deep and involving gameplay that even non-RPG fans could enjoy, and a superb storyline that takes you to the end of time. If you can’t find the super-rare SNES version, it’s included in Final Fantasy Chronicles for the PS1.

8. Rock Band (Electronic Arts/various platforms)
Rock on, world. Harmonix takes the formula that drove its Guitar Hero series and turns it into a true party experience as players take up the drums and a microphone. With the fleet of new downloadable songs coming every week (this week’s update provided new tracks by Disturbed and Jimmy Buffett), the party will never stop. Even if you’re not normally musically inclined (or you’ve never touched a microphone in your life), you owe it to yourself to do a little Rocking.

“Hadouken!” In 1991, the fighting genre as we know it was born, and Street Fighter II paved the way to its greatness. This classic fighting game holds up significantly over time, even with its countless sequels and spin-offs. The six-button gameplay is dynamic (special moves and combo possibilities galore), the character selection is vast (from sumo wrestlers to weird electrical Brazilian freaks) and the two-player combat is undeniably fun, even if you’re on the losing end of the stick. Get it on Xbox Live arcade now, or wait for the forthcoming Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, due later this summer. “Shoryuken!”

6. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Activision/Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)
There is simply only one better first-person shooter on the market today (see our number 3 choice) than the incredible Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This game not only goes for the gut with its true-to-war-experience performance (it is unbelievably intense at times – you really feel at times that the enemy is closing in on you) and superb shoot-em-up gameplay. Where else can you experience a nuclear explosion, only to watch your character collapse and die from it? The multiplayer component is worthwhile as well, with an endless ranking system, various weapons and endless competition.

5. Tetris (various/various)
In what is undoubtedly the most beloved Russian import since Yakov Smirnoff (and, yes, we’re kidding), Alexei Pajitnov’s Tetris stands as the best puzzle game ever made. How undeniably cool is it to put together lines of four using variously shaped pieces, while avoiding the pratfalls of leaving gaps that could lead to shapes stacking to the top of the screen and ending your game? If we had to pick a favorite version, we’d go with Atari’s arcade game because two-player Tetris never gets old.

4. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Konami/various platforms)
The Castlevania series was doing just fine with its usual platforming/whipping antics. Then Koji Igarashi and company created something strikingly bold with Symphony of the Night. The Metroid-ish set-up offers a new exploration feature that makes the action more dramatic (you have to carefully balance health and items this time around), as are both the game’s visuals and music. 3. Half-Life 2 (Sierra/PC)
Scientist-turned-savior Gordon Freeman’s battle against aliens from another universe continues in Half-Life 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the original. The game comes alive through a gripping story and memorable characters including the super cute Alyx Vance and was bolstered by the inclusion of a detailed physics system (and the sadistically addictive gravity gun) that provides for some of the game’s more memorable action sequences. Re-released along with its episodic sequels as part of The Orange Box for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, Half-Life 2 is an unquestionable must-play.

2. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo/Nintendo 64)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time took the classic adventure series into an immersive new arena when it made the jump to 3-D. Combat and dungeon exploration took on an entirely new meaning when experienced in a world that felt as if it was living and breathing around you. The hero Link also found a new means of transportation — the horse Epona — that opened up the game with a believable sense of freedom. Combined with a memorable soundtrack and some truly epic boss battles, the Legend of Zelda series couldn’t have asked for a better facelift.

1. Super Mario Bros. 3 (Nintendo/NES)
Super Mario has done a lot for this industry. He’s invented the platforming genre as we know it, he’s gone racing, he’s become a doctor, he’s engaged in RPG adventures – really, his list of accomplishments is something. Nothing, however, compares to the utter greatness of Super Mario Bros. 3. It’s everything a sequel should be, with secrets to find, new outfits (and abilities) to use, better graphics, great music and the same wondrous gameplay that took us into the majesty of Mario to begin with, whether it’s flying through the air with a raccoon tail or bopping enemies on the head, old-school style. It’s available via Virtual Console now at a very affordable 500 points, and if you don’t own it (or the cartridge, for that matter), you’re insane. This is the best game ever made.
