A painting simulator on a top 25 list might seem odd, but we picked Mario Paint for a reason. Not only can you utilize a special SNES mouse controller to create art, but you can also partake in one of the greatest fly-swatting minigames ever created. Really, it’s a deeper experience than you might expect from a painting game, as only Nintendo can deliver. We need a Wii version.

24. Wii Sports (Nintendo/Nintendo Wii)
Wii Sports made the list for a few reasons. First, it comes with every Wii console. Second, it’s fun, whether you go toe-to-toe with someone in a boxing or bowling game. (It also includes golf, tennis and baseball.) Lastly, it lets you play as your Miis to give it a personality quirk. Hey, Nintendo, a sequel would be nice.

23. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Sega/Sega Genesis)
The original introduced us to a certain blue hedgehog, but Sonic the Hedgehog 2 gave us even more to love. Better level design, two player interactivity, enhanced presentation and a slew of new Dr. Robotnik-fueled bosses await as you guide Sonic and his newfound friend Tails through enemy-bopping and ring-collecting stages. If you can’t find the original Genesis version, the downloadable Xbox Live Arcade and Virtual Console editions fit the bill for a meager $5.

22. Starcraft (Blizzard/PC)
Blizzard created a phenomenon still unmatched with Starcraft, a real-time strategy (RTS) game with three separate species (the Terrans, the Zerg and the Protoss) fighting for intergalactic supremacy. It raised the bar on RTS games with deep gameplay (involving countless tools and armies) and its highly addictive Battle.net-supported multiplayer action. It makes us that much hungrier for the StarCraft II sequel.

21. Super Mario Kart (Nintendo/SNES)
We love Mario Kart Wii, but there’s nothing like the original Mario Kart, with its timeless charm, great racing controls and true-to-the-SNES visual presentation. If you haven’t played this classic kart racer yet, take the time now to launch a few turtle shells with it. In fact, bring a friend – it’s even more fun with them racing against you.

20. Gunstar Heroes (Sega/Genesis)
Gunstar Heroes remains one of the best action games. It’s an over-the-top shoot-em-up action game with various power-ups, excessively cool levels (at one point you ride in a mine shift on a high-speed cart), ridiculously over-the-top bosses (just try to outlast all seven forms of Seven Force) and cooperative gameplay. 19. Day of the Tentacle (LucasArts/PC)
Bernard, Laverne and Hoagie didn’t make for the video game heroes players we’re accustomed to, but that’s what made Day of the Tentacle such a memorable adventure game. Tasked with saving the future of the planet from falling to a race of mutant tentacles, the geeky trio traveled through time, space and the darkest reaches of the Edison family’s eclectic mansion to free the world of tentacle oppression. Hilarious dialogue, a distinct art style and truly bizarre situations and settings make Day of the Tentacle a timeless classic.

18. Burnout 3: Takedown (Electronic Arts/Xbox and PlayStation 2)Burnout 3: Takedown only has one rule – smash everything. This fast-paced driving game is intense and satisfying, allowing you to plow someone into a wall or passing traffic (or any other given obstacle) while barely losing any speed (unless, of course, you hit the wall head-on). Crash mode is also worth noting, where you intentionally drive into traffic to cause the most damage. Without it, the racing genre simply wouldn’t be the same.

17. Resident Evil 4 (Capcom/GameCube, Wii, PlayStation 2)
The original Resident Evil is still incredible, but it can’t compare to the sheer brilliance of the action-packed part four. This time around, Leon Kennedy finds himself shooting angry jibberish-speaking freaks, a chainsaw-wielding maniac and plenty of other unspeakable creatures while trying to save the President’s daughter from danger. The PS2 and Wii versions of RE 4 also have a separate adventure featuring the sexy Ada Wong – and her hefty arsenal of weapons.

16. God of War (SCEA/PlayStation 2)Kratos is the man. God of War’s muscular Adonis displays sheer, uncensored action as he tears apart minions, serpents and other demons with ease, either with his bare hands or his mighty chain-blades. It’s unbelievably beautiful visuals bring out the best in the PS2. Finally, it has an interesting sex minigame. Sure, you can’t see it, but you can feel it. Isn’t that what’s really important? We think so.

15. Super Mario 64 (Nintendo/Nintendo 64)
Mario games were doing just fine in 2-D, but Super Mario 64 took a bold leap forward with 3-D. The result is terrific, whether you’re flying through the air, swimming underwater or pounding Goombas by jumping on or punching them. The graphics and music are good (for an N64 debut), and the inclusion of Metal Mario is sheer genius, letting you walk on ocean floors and gather otherwise inaccessible items. 14. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (Capcom/various platforms)
No one can deny the power of super-deformed Street Fighter characters hypothetically duking it out. In this puzzler, you set up gems and counter-gems, to the point that they explode in glass-shattering glory, leaving your opponent open for a powerful counter-attack. The HD Remix version for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network adds the game’s most sought after feature — online play.

13. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Nintendo/Nintendo Wii)
We hold Brawl in the highest regard. It has a number of additions, including some beautiful stages, fun new characters (who doesn’t love knocking people around with Solid Snake?), and most importantly, online play that is fun three months later. If you haven’t gotten in on this instantly accessible fighting game yet (you don’t even need to be a fan of the genre to truly enjoy it), now’s the time.

12. Grand Theft Auto IV (Rockstar Games/Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)
“I’m the one who survived!” With that, Grand Theft Auto IV protagonist Niko Bellic shows us why his game is the best GTA yet. With a huge world to explore (wait till you unlock the new islands), hundreds of non-violent activities to do around Liberty City (buying clothes, drinking, dating and the horizontal mumbo), great gun-toting gameplay (for those who can handle its escalation of violence) and of course, following your fate any which way it takes you.
