4. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Konami/various platforms)
The Castlevania series was doing just fine with its usual platforming/whipping antics. Then Koji Igarashi and company created something strikingly bold with Symphony of the Night. The Metroid-ish set-up offers a new exploration feature that makes the action more dramatic (you have to carefully balance health and items this time around), as are both the game’s visuals and music. If you can’t track down the rare PlayStation version, not to worry – the game’s available for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.
