Treyarch has revealed details on Call of Duty: World at War, previously known as Call of Duty 5. Unlike Call of Duty 1, 2 and 4, which were developed by Infinity Ward, World at War is being developed by Treyarch, the developer of Call of Duty 3, and will return The FPS franchise to its WWII roots. Treyarch also revealed to the Official Xbox Magazine that the next Call of Duty will, for the first time, support 4 player co-op over Xbox Live. IGN has contacted publisher Activision to see if that feature will make its way over to the other platforms, but no confirmation on that yet.
After Activision announced the next Call of Duty will feature a new military theater last May, fans may be disappointed to hear that the series is going back to WWII. However, Activision is remaining true to its word by taking the franchise to territories in the Pacific, with players fighting the Japanese. Parts of the game will also take place in Berlin as the Russians advance in on the Germans.
While Infinity Ward isn’t developing Call of Duty: World at War, the FPS will still utilize Infinity Ward’s award-winning Call of Duty 4 engine. Treyarch has also recieved a full year of development time over its previous Call of Duty 3 release.
Although no specific dates or platform confirmations were made, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith said last May that the next installment of Call of Duty would make its way over to the DS, PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 platforms before the end of the company’s 2009 fiscal year, which has typically ended on March 31.

I do not want Trophies, Money or not even a title saying I am number "1". You can have your cheap trophies, paper titles, and dingy headbands. I am a "STORY" to my peers, a "LEGEND" for your kids to hear, and a "FOLKLORE" to keep you from dieing with fear - Calvin D. Kates aka Chauncy "TRU" Talon.

Co-op could be lots of fun.Idk how I feel about it going back to WWII though, I’ve played so many games with that…I’m kind of tired of the like undeveloped weaponry too, and did they have airborn UAV back in WWII?
I’ll definitely end up pre-ordering though lol.
I hope they do something with the prestige situation maybe too..NBS on COD4...We get OURS!

06/12/2008 at 1:20 pm #24327Im kind of dissapointed its going back to WWII, and that Infinity Ward isnt developing it, makes no sense seeing how well COD4 did, but at least they are using Infinity Wards engine so it might not be all bad, and the 4 player co-op is off the damn chain…Im def runnin that with 3 of ya’ll….either way Imma cop it, but I still have a feeling people will play COD4 also after 5 comes out just for the modern war aspect
06/12/2008 at 4:03 pm #24338Everybody did love 3 because of it’s engine. COD 4 is that truth. I’m just hurt that I have no money, and no job to get my shit fixed. NO MSG 4 . I’m shot myself. [BANG, Gets up and look into mirro see 2 lives left and 10 second infinite health from respawning]

Call of Duty: World at War completely changes the rules of engagement by redefining WWII gaming and thrusting players into the final tension-filled, unforgiving battles against a new ferocious enemy in the most dangerous and suspenseful action ever seen.
Powered by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare™ technology, Call of Duty: World at War brings an uncensored edge to combat, as soldiers face the most harrowing and climactic European and Pacific battles in which an enemy, who knows no surrender and no retreat, will fight to the last breath, unleashing an arsenal of lethal surprising tactics. Peril and danger lurk throughout the battlefield as players combat the unknown risk of the new chaos of battle.
From the remains of Russia and the ruins of Berlin, to the beach and jungles of the deadly Pacific Theater, the volatile action takes on added depth as players employ new features that previously were only available in multiplayer, including perks, rankings and online stats in up to four-player cooperative gameplay, and take advantage of the new infantry and vehicle-based weapons, like the potent flamethrower, that will set the battlefield ablaze.
