Now to create a room if you plan to host a game, click on “Create” and a list of your games sorted by letter will appear. Note that you must have the ROMS available in your ROM list before opening the client for them to appear here. Suppose you want to play GoldenEye, you would go to the “G” and select the ROM you want to play; in this case regular GoldenEye or GoldenEye (U) [!].
After you create the game, you will be taken to the game room, where the other players will join you to play. There is a chat section where you can chat with the players in the game room, or the chat on top which is the global server chat where all players in the server can chat. On the top right is a list of all the players in the server, and on the bottom right is a list of the players in the room.
When you have players and want to start a game, just click “Start” and the emulator will load up the game in all players’ computers. Then all of you will be in the game. If players desire to view the game in fullscreen after the game has started, just hit ALT+ENTER but make sure all players do it and all their computers are capable of playing well while in fullscreen. By this point, you are playing online hopefully with no desynch!
Now I’m going to run down a few problems that arise while playing online.
Lag is when the game freezes for a few seconds due to a player/players dropping “packets” (basically just not sending/receiving information) through their connection. The emulator attempts to catch all the players up but when they fail to land on the same spot in the game, desynch occurs and this is when you may see a player stop moving, playing strangely or slapping the air or walls in GoldenEye for example. This used to be a huge problem due to the emulators not being capable of syncing games right but now it is very easy to avoid. Just make sure all players are using the same video plugins or at least have a similar video setup, and are not going to experience a lot of lag due to their connections being used up.
