We live in the High Definition age, and more and more people are buying HD TV’s and wanting to play their games in HD too.
We know that 1080p is the best resolution you can get, but when we play games is that really true.
So after looking at a few discussion forums about games and HD it seems like playing games on 1080p might not exactly be the best option.
It was only last week when Brook mentioned on the podcast that PS3 games all run in 720p, i had never noticed this on the back of the box. He was wondering why the PS3 runs most of its games in that resolution whereas the 360 displays them in 1080p.
According to quite a few sources it is because PS3 games are natively rendered in 720p and so are 360 games. The 360 however upscales the resolution to 1080p, to fit the TV. So when you play a game at it’s native resolution they will look better than it being upscaled.
It was also said that you wouldn’t really notice the difference between a 1080i resolution to a 1080p resolution on a 32″ inch screen, and it’s only if you go above that TV size that you will notice some slight differences.
This is quite intriguing to know as when someone brags about playing games in 1080p on a 42″ TV they might not actually be getting as good a picture as someone playing a game in their native resolution of 720p on a smaller screen.Like i said this is just things i have been reading and i don’t know what is fact and what is not but lets get abit of a discussion going.

You can obviously see the difference between SD and HD.
I’m only using a 32″ TV at the moment with maximum resolution of 1080i and i think it looks amazing. I’m looking to upgrade to 1080p soon but only when i can afford a 42″ TV, which won’t be for a while yet. You know us students are broke as fuck lol.
I’m going to my dads tonight for the champions league final and watching on his 42″ tele and taking my 360 with me so i’m gonna take a closer look.

It depends on the TV. I had a vizio 37 inch TV in the past and my new 46″ samsung blows it away even though its larger and mid size HD TV’s should look “better.”
Not all HD TV’s in the same size class are even remotely equal in terms of picture clarity etc.. Contrast ratio (amount of colors) and refresh rate (Ghosting?..like his football trail) has ALOT to do with image clarity.
Also some HDTV’s have poor scalers in them so if a ps3 is outputting 720p the TV is still for the most part upscaling it to the HDTV’s native resolution which if its large is over 720 so thats where lag comes in if the TV scaler sucks. The good thing about the 360 is that it scales before it gets to your TV so your TV doesnt have to do it.
For example scat of your dad has a 42″ and you hook your ps3 to it your still not seeing a 720 picture. Most likely your TV is upscaling it anyway. Unless you enable a special setting that displays the signal “as is”
Ye brook thats what i read about, the games get upscaled anyway unless you set the shit to run in certain resolution.
I’m gonna take my 360 to my dads tonight and i’m gonna run it in all resolutions to see if i can notice any differences.
It’s a very complex subject but an intriguing one coz the quality of TV’s are so varied these days. Not just in resolution but in all the other types of specs it has. The contrast ratio, how man hz it runs in.
I was checking out a brand new LED Sony Bravia TV that cost nearly £3000 which had 100hz technology but then i seen another LED TV for about £2000 with 200hz technology, so it’s all just crazy and makes finding a tv which is better than all others virtually impossible because everyone seems to be missing certain specs that make it a true must own. Anyway i got abit of a problem.
So i’ve just got to my Dads and hooked up my 360 to his TV using my HDMI cable but it keeps saying that the maximum signal output i can get is 1080i.
I don’t understand this coz everytime i have brought my PS3 and hooked it up i get a 1080p signal.
I swapped round the HDMI cable to the one i usually use on my PS3 and i still can only get the 1080i signal.
I ran the initial setup of the system again to see if that made a difference and it didn’t.
I’m pretty gutted i didn’t bring my PS3 now to be honest.
Oh well, street fighter still looks sick.

So i’m looking to get a new TV soon for my bedroom, i’m trying to build myself a sort of entertainment centre in there. I already got a study made for when i start uni.
Anyway i’m getting stressed about which tele to buy, now i’m going to wall mount this because i’m running out of space in my room but i got a good place on the wall where it could go, and i’m guessing a 40″ would look great where i want it, with my PS3 and 360 placed underneath it.Anyway i have been scouring the shops and internet looking for good deals, my absolute maximum budget is £1000, most of the places in the UK allow you to buy on finance with 0% interest if you pay within 9 months or something. Which is no problem with the money i get for going to uni.
So i’m not that tech savvy as i have said before but i know i want a tele with HD 1080p, a good contrast ratio and good HZ.
I did find a 40″ 1080p Sony Bravia yesterday in a shop for £699, now i didn’t get chance to look properly at the specs but i thought that was a pretty good deal.
So i just need some help really before i go putting money down on anything, like i say the maximum i am willing to spend is £1000 so if anyone could let me know what type of specs they would recommend i look for with that amount of money then let me know.

well you need to look at TV’s and surround recievers on a model by model basis. If you find a deal… write the model number down and look up the specs and reviews online. Then do a search against the model number on the http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/ website. They have a thread for just about every model and provides good insight.
You want a TV with a high contrast ratio and a “as is”, “just scan” or “picture processing off” option so that you can display the game signal as is (without lag from image processing. Also a game mode is good to have as well but “as is” is better.
ok i have found what i think is a good 40″ Sony Bravia, at a decent price.

Now from the shop i have found it in it is going for £999, but i have found a few other online retailers that are selling for cheaper.

Quick question
Is 1080p the same whether you have it through a HDMI cable or a component cable?
I was using the HDMI cable that came with my 360 Elite and it only put out a 1080i signal, so i have just swapped it over and i’m using the component cable and now it is giving me a 1080p signal.
So now i’m all confused coz i didn’t know my TV supported 1080p, so right now i’m like WTF!Twitter.com/scatigno1
