Videogames Console and Games sells this month

September 13, 2007 – Official NPD data for August is in and not surprisingly, Nintendo’s two systems rank number-one and number-two in overall American hardware sales respectively. August marks the second month that Wii took the top spot, with 403,000 in sales. DS, meanwhile, sucked in another 383,000 buyers. The third best-selling system for the month was Xbox 360 at 276,000 units, a noticeable increase over July and one obviously spurred by Microsoft’s recently announced price drop. Approximately 201,000 people bought a PlayStation 2 and 115,000 a PSP. Trailing behind all other major home systems was PlayStation 3 with about 130,000 units sold.

Wii and DS have ranked number-one and number-two respectively on the monthly hardware sales charts since last November.

The top-selling game of the month was Madden NFL 08 for Xbox 360 with nearly 900,000 units moved. The PS2 build of the game pushed another 645,000 copies. Meanwhile, the Wii iteration managed only 115,000 in sales. The third best-seller was BioShock for Xbox 360, which shipped on August 21 and still sold through 490,000 copies. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, unveiled on August 28, moved about 220,000 units in four days, which is no slouch, either. Wii Play and Mario Strikers Charged sold through 256,000 and 148,000 respectively.

Prime 3: Corruption sold better in three or four days than Prime 2: Echoes did in two weeks. If Retro Studios’ final act in the trilogy has any legs, it should easily surpass overall sales of Echoes before the end of the year and could ultimately prove to be a million-seller.
